I have been completely absent from the blog world for a week now. Blame it on grad school. The last couple of weeks of the semester are here and I suddenly realized I have final papers to write. You would think after all these years I would be more prepared...but, nope.
So I will be MIA for the next two or so weeks. But I thought I would leave you with one jaw-dropping question from a student.
I never thought in a million years that I would hear this question again:
"Are mermaids real?"
Yes, this is the second time a student has asked this question. I think the first person who asked me was in his/her late 20s or early 30s. This student that just asked is 23.
Is there some sort of mermaids-are-real propaganda going on I don't know about? Because if not...I mean, come on!
LOL, it's like the people who insist that it's important to get the facts about vampires correct.
ReplyDeleteYou don't believe in mermaids? Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZrHCRpOXDg
ReplyDeleteSeriously, why on earth do your students keep fixating on this topic? What mermaid-oriented literature are you assigning?
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I must admit that I'm no longer surprised to hear that your students have such daffily confused understandings of science. All I can do now is wonder why their ignorance is directed in such curious ways.
Bardiac-Thank you for reminding me of a story that involves vampires and a student! Next week, perhaps.
ReplyDeletehorse-That video disturbed me. But as long as we're posting mermaid videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHGDVUqY9QI
PK- Haha, let it be known that I do not teach mermaid literature! I just happen to have a little compare/contrast exercise where we look at Disney heroines and how they were portrayed in earlier paintings. The Little Mermaid is one of those characters.
People have funny reactions to this question in class. One student said, "If mermaids were real, don't you think we would have seen them in an aquarium?"
"If mermaids were real, don't you think we would have seen them in an aquarium?"
ReplyDeleteFirst I laughed, and then I remembered this...

Ink- That is just going to confuse the hell out of my students.
